Project in progress ... Storm surge barrier in Nieuwpoort

Yesterday, an important step was taken in the construction of the storm surge barrier at the Nieuwpoort shipyard.

The first part of the rebates for the bypass sluices has been installed and adjusted.
These rebates are completely woven into the concrete structure of the bypass channels.

The bypass channels form the connection between the North Sea and the land. When the storm surge barrier is opened, the water can flow through these channels. When the barrier is closed, the bypass gates will be closed and a barrier is formed between the sea and the hinterland.

An impressive structure, especially when you consider that the canal is 7 meters wide and 6 meters high.
